What Is Notion AI — and Do You Actually Need It?

Notion added AI to its already-powerful platform. But is it worth it for solopreneurs? Here's an honest look at what Notion AI does and who it's really for.

What Is Notion AI

If you've spent any time in online business circles, you've probably heard people talking about Notion. It's a workspace tool — part notes app, part project manager, part database — and it has a passionate following.

A couple of years ago, Notion added AI capabilities to the platform. And while it's genuinely useful, it's also one of those tools that's easy to over-invest in before you know if it actually fits how you work.

What Notion Is First — Before the AI

Notion is a flexible workspace where you can keep notes, manage projects, build content calendars, track clients, store SOPs, and organize pretty much anything you want to organize. A lot of solopreneurs use it as a central hub for their business — one place where everything lives.

If you're already using Notion and love it, the AI add-on is a natural next step. If you've never used Notion, the AI features alone are probably not a reason to start — there's a learning curve to the platform itself before you get to the AI layer.

What Notion AI Actually Does

Once you're inside Notion, the AI can:

Help you write and edit. Ask it to draft a page, summarize a long document, rewrite something in a clearer tone, or generate ideas directly inside your workspace.

Summarize your notes. This is genuinely useful — paste in messy meeting notes and ask Notion AI to pull out the key decisions and action items. Clean, fast, no switching tabs.

Answer questions about your content. You can ask Notion AI questions about documents stored in your workspace — "what did we decide about X?" or "summarize the notes from my last three client calls." It searches your content and synthesizes an answer.

Help with brainstorming. Stuck on a project? Ask it for angles, frameworks, or first drafts without leaving your workspace.

Who It's Really For

Notion AI makes the most sense if you're already a Notion user and you're managing a meaningful volume of notes, projects, and documents. The "answer questions about your workspace" feature in particular becomes more valuable the more content you have stored there.

If you're new to AI tools and looking for a starting point, ChatGPT or Claude are simpler entry points. Get comfortable with those first, then consider whether a workspace-integrated tool like Notion AI makes sense for how you work.

The Bottom Line

Notion AI is a solid tool — not essential for everyone, but genuinely useful for the right person. If you're already organized inside Notion and spending time on summaries, drafts, and information retrieval, the AI add-on earns its keep quickly.

If you're not a Notion user yet, start with the free AI tools first and come back to this one once you know what you actually need.
