The Pain of Not Doing It

Caren Glasser Fear & Mindset

I have a file problem.

Not a small one. My desktop looks like a filing cabinet exploded. My Google Drive has folders inside folders that I haven’t opened since 2023. My phone camera roll is — let’s just say it’s a situation.

Every week I tell myself I’m going to deal with it. Every week something more urgent wins. And every week the pile gets a little more daunting than it was the week before.

Here’s the thing: I know exactly what tool would fix this. It’s called Cowork — it’s built right into the Claude desktop app — and it does something that used to require a professional organizer or a very patient assistant. You point it at your desktop, tell it to look inside each file and figure out what it actually is, and it sorts the chaos into a structure that makes sense. It even asks you before it touches anything it’s unsure about.

I know this because I researched it. I wrote about it. I have the starting prompt saved.

And last week, I opened Cowork, looked at that prompt field, and closed the laptop.

Not because I was scared. Not because I didn’t understand it. But because in that moment, I did a very human calculation — the kind we all do, whether we realize it or not:

The pain of not doing it is less than the pain of doing it.

The mess on my desktop is a known quantity. Annoying, yes. A time drain, absolutely. But familiar. I know where things roughly are. I have a system, even if it would make an actual professional organizer weep.

The fix? That’s unknown territory. What if it moves something I need? What if it takes longer than I think? What if I have to make a hundred decisions I don’t have bandwidth for today?

So my brain did the math. And the math said: not today.

I’m telling you this because I am almost certain you have done the exact same thing. Maybe not with Cowork. Maybe with a scheduling tool you keep meaning to set up, or a template you know would save you two hours a week, or an AI tool someone recommended three months ago that you bookmarked and never opened.

You know it would help. The pain of not having it is real. And you’re still not doing it.

That’s not a character flaw. That’s a completely rational human response to uncertainty. The status quo, even when it’s frustrating, is a known quantity. And known is comfortable in a way that better-but-unfamiliar isn’t — at least not yet.

I don’t have a tidy resolution for you today. I haven’t done it yet. The files are still everywhere.

But I’m naming the thing. Because naming it is usually the first step toward actually doing something about it.

I’ll report back.

What’s the tool or task you keep not doing — even though you know it would help? Tell me in the comments. I have a feeling we’re not alone in this.
