Fear & Mindset
One Folder. That's It.
Yesterday I told you about the pain calculation.
The one where your brain quietly does the math and decides that the discomfort of staying stuck is less than the discomfort of fixing it. And so you don’t fix it. Even when you know exactly how.
I’ve been sitting with that since I wrote it. And I realized something.
I’ve been thinking about this wrong.
When I tell myself I need to organize my files, here’s what my brain actually hears: organize everything. The desktop. The Drive. The phone. All of it. Now.
No wonder I close the laptop.
That’s not a task. That’s a life sentence.
I’ve been reading James Clear’s Atomic Habits — and if you haven’t read it, the central idea is almost insultingly simple: the size of the action has to be small enough that your brain stops treating it as a threat. Not “go to the gym.” Just “put on your gym shoes.” Not “write the chapter.” Just “open the document.”
The resistance isn’t to the outcome. It’s to the size of the ask.
So I’ve been asking myself the wrong question. Not “when am I going to get my files organized?” but “what is the smallest possible version of this that I could actually do today?”
And I have an answer.
One folder. My brand box folder.
That’s it. Not the desktop. Not the Drive. Not the camera roll situation we are not going to discuss. Just the brand box — the folder where I keep the core documents that define my business, my voice, my client work.
It’s the folder that matters most. Which is probably why it’s also the one that’s been quietly bothering me the longest.
I’m going to open Cowork, point it at that one folder, and let it do what it’s built to do — look inside each file, figure out what it actually is, and ask me before it moves anything it’s unsure about.
One folder. One session. That’s the whole commitment.
I’ll report back on what happens. But here’s what I want you to think about in the meantime:
What’s YOUR one folder? Not the whole project. Not the whole system. The one small thing — the one specific, nameable thing — where you could let AI help you today?
Because that’s where you start. Not at the beginning of everything. Just at the beginning of one thing.
Tell me your “one folder” in the comments. Let’s make each other accountable.
