How to Write a Bio That Actually Sounds Like You (With a Little Help From AI)
Let me ask you something.
When did you last update your bio?
Not the one in your email signature that you’ve been meaning to fix. Not the LinkedIn summary that still references something you stopped doing two years ago. Your actual bio. The one that shows up on your website, your speaker page, your About section.
The bio is one of the hardest things a solopreneur ever has to write. Not because you don’t know what you do. But because writing about yourself in a way that feels true, current, and compelling all at the same time is genuinely difficult.
And most of us would rather do almost anything else.
Here’s what I want you to try.
Open your AI tool of choice — ChatGPT, Claude, whatever you use — and have a conversation. Not “write me a bio.” An actual conversation.
Start with something like this:
I need help updating my bio. Instead of me describing myself, I’m going to answer some questions and I want you to listen first. Then we’ll write together. Ready?
Then let it ask you questions. What do you do. Who you do it for. What you did before this. What you’re proudest of. What you want people to feel when they read your name.
Answer honestly. Don’t edit yourself. Just talk.
What comes back will surprise you.
I know this works because I’ve done it. And what AI is remarkably good at is taking the scattered, honest, slightly rambling way we talk about ourselves and finding the thread running through it.
The thread that was always there.
It doesn’t invent you. It listens to you and reflects back what you actually said — in cleaner language, in a shape that works, in words you can actually use.
That’s not a small thing when you’ve been staring at a blank page for three months.
A few things to keep in mind when you try this:
The first draft won’t be perfect. That’s fine. React to it. Tell AI what’s off — too formal, too casual, missing this thing, doesn’t sound like me. That conversation is where the real bio emerges.
Read it out loud when you think you’re done. If you stumble over a word it’s not your word. Change it.
And don’t let AI talk you into third person if you hate third person. You’re allowed to have preferences. The tool works for you, not the other way around.
Your bio is often the first thing a potential client reads about you. It deserves to sound like you actually wrote it.
With AI, you basically did.
Give it twenty minutes this week. You might be surprised what you find out about yourself in the process.
