Fear & Mindset
You Don't Have to Feel Ready to Begin

There’s a version of starting that everyone talks about like it’s a mood. Like one morning you wake up, something clicks into place, and suddenly you feel ready. Confident. Fearless. And that’s the day you finally begin.
I don’t think that day exists. I’ve never met it, and I’ve done a lot of beginning.
Here’s what actually happens instead. You want to do something you’ve never done before. Something that means putting yourself out there in a way you haven’t risked yet, showing people a version of you that hasn’t been seen before, saying the thing out loud instead of keeping it safely in your head. And the second you get close to it, the fear shows up right on schedule. Not because something is wrong. Because something is real.
I used to think the fear meant I wasn’t ready. Now I think the fear just means I’m paying attention.
The mistake is waiting for the fear to leave before you take the first step. It won’t. It doesn’t work that way. Courage isn’t the absence of fear, it’s just fear that decided to move anyway. So you take the step you can actually see in front of you. Not the whole staircase. Just the one step.
Then something interesting happens. That first step makes the second one visible. You couldn’t have seen it from where you were standing before, but you can see it now. So you take that one too. And somewhere around the third step, you stop waiting to feel ready, because you’re already moving, and moving turns out to feel a lot more like readiness than waiting ever did.
But here’s the part I don’t skip, because it’s the part that actually matters. Steven Covey gave me a phrase years ago and I never gave it back: begin with the end in mind.
Because taking steps without knowing where you’re headed isn’t bravery. It’s just wandering with better posture. You have to know what you’re walking toward, even loosely, even if the details are still fuzzy, or you won’t recognize the moment you arrive. You’ll just keep walking past it, looking for a feeling that was never going to announce itself.
So here’s what I actually believe. You don’t need to feel ready. You need to know where you’re headed, and you need to be willing to take the step you can see. That’s it. That’s the whole formula. Not fearless. Not certain. Just willing, one step at a time, walking toward something you decided mattered before you ever felt sure of yourself.
You were never supposed to feel ready. You were just supposed to begin.
