Build It Sturdy Enough to Bend
I haven’t told you the whole story yet this week, even though it’s been true since Monday.
Something in my life shifted. A date changed. A plan that had taken real time and thought stopped applying, almost overnight. I’m not ready to tell you the whole story — some of it isn’t mine to share until it’s finished happening — but I’ve spent this week writing from inside it. The pivot. The rebuild. The fifteen minutes of sitting with what was actually true before I let anything help me act on it.
Here’s what I keep coming back to, now that the week is almost done.
I didn’t build a system that never breaks. Nobody has that. What I built — slowly, over months, mostly without realizing that’s what I was doing — was a system sturdy enough to bend without breaking. One that could take a real disruption, a real change of plans, and still produce something worth reading four days later.
That’s a different goal than the one most of us are chasing. We tend to build for smooth. For predictable. For nothing ever going wrong. And then something goes wrong — because it always eventually does — and the whole thing buckles, because it was never designed to flex in the first place.
I think the better goal is resilience, not smoothness. Not a business that never gets disrupted. A business that can absorb disruption and keep standing.
That’s true of systems. It’s also true of people.
The version of me from a few years ago would have panicked this week. Would have felt like the whole thing was falling apart because one part of it did. What’s different now isn’t that I’ve stopped having plans fall through — that’s just business, and it’s just life. What’s different is that I’ve built enough structure, and enough trust in my own ability to rebuild quickly, that a broken plan doesn’t feel like a crisis anymore. It feels like a Tuesday.
I want that for you too. Not a life where nothing ever goes sideways. A business built sturdy enough that when something does — and it will — you can bend instead of break.
More on what actually happened this week, when I’m ready to tell it.
